A desert in Japan? - Tottori's Sand Dunes and Sand Museum

Tottori Sand Dunes

Tottori Sand Dunes Tottori’s Sand Museum

A 20 minutes’ drive away from Tottori City lies the Tottori Sand Dunes, an expansive stretch of gravel sand that extends all the way to the coast of the Sea of Japan. The Tottori Sand Dunes are one of the largest sand dunes in Japan, measuring 2.4km from north to south and 16km from east to west. The appearance of the sand dunes changes according to the seasons and time of day, giving their majestic presence a new look each time. There are many ways to enjoy the sand dunes - ride a friendly camel through the dunes, admire the ever-changing wind tracks on the sand, or try out sand sports such as paragliding and sandboarding. Make sand-filled memories in your own unique way! A visit to the dunes is best complemented with a trip to the only sand museum in the world. Tottori’s Sand Museum showcases sand sculptures, and until January 5th (Sun) 2020, the “Travel around the world in sand, South Asian Edition” will allow you to see rare works created by 21 sand sculptors from 10 different countries.
