Japanese Denim Street in Kurashiki City in Okayama Prefecture Japanese Denim Street in Kurashiki City in Okayama Prefecture

“Japanese Denim” may not be particularly well-known even within Japan. However, did you know that Kurashiki City in Okayama Prefecture is a paradise for denim enthusiasts from all over the world? Kurashiki started out as a cotton-farming area, but the dyeing, weaving and sewing industries soon began to blossom here, and before long the city had evolved into an internationally recognised manufacturer of high-quality denim. “Denim Street”, the birthplace of the domestic jeans industry, houses a wide variety of denim and denim-related shops, from Kojima Denim, to other fashionable shops selling denim accessories and even cafes situated in refurbished townhouses. In keeping with the denim theme, Kurashiki’s sweets and snacks which are coloured in denim blue are extremely popular on social media and are not to be missed! A short distance from Denim Street, the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter brims with tourists all year round, who come for its famous townscape and denim shops. The nostalgic white-walled warehouses and rows of willow trees flanking the Kurashiki River evoke memories of a stylish retro-modern period, a sight that continues to attract tourists from all over the world.
