The Sea of Japan’s coast is famous for its bountiful seafood catch, and Toyama is no exception. The prefecture is well-known among Japanese for its firefly squid, white shrimp, yellowtail and Benizuwai crab (red snow crab). At Shinminato Fishing Port in Toyama, crabs are sold via Seri auction, a uniquely Japanese process of trading seafood that has garnered a huge amount of interest from foreign tourists. While typical Seri auctions evoke images of fishermen and merchants haggling over fish before the sun even rises, the Hiruseri (afternoon seri) auction of Benizuwai crab in Toyama is done in the afternoon instead and is extremely popular among foreign tourists. Take in the Seri atmosphere without having to drag yourself out of bed, then stop by Shinminato Kanigoya to enjoy a lunch of freshly purchased Benizuwai Crab. Toyama’s Benizuwai Crabs are known for its rich flavour, juicy flesh and abundant roe. After you have filled your stomach with luscious crabs, you can take a short 30 minutes’ drive down to Toyama Glass Workshop, where you can have a tour of the premises and shop for glass souvenirs. Toyama’s glass industry has been gaining international prominence in recent years, so this is a must-visit attraction!

How to get there :From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to JR Toyama Station. From JR Toyama Station, take the Toyama-Burikani Bus and alight at Kittokito Market stop.
