Aoike

Kita Tomomi

One of the 12 lakes within Aomori’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shirakami-Sanchi, Aoike is a popular spot when it comes to sightseeing in Japan. You’ll be greeted with a body of water so blue, it’s beautiful. It may also come as a surprise that it is completely natural, untouched by Man. Why it’s such a deep blue is still a mystery, but for now, enjoy the way it changes from clear cobalt blue to emerald, depending on the light.

Take a trek along the hiking course, and work up a good sweat! Better still, there are plenty of great spots for you to take photos along the way.

To get there, take the JR Gono line to Juniko station, then take the Konan Bus towards Okojuniko, which will take around 15 minutes. From Okojuniko bus stop, walk for about 10 minutes to get to Aoike.
