Located at the north side of one of the world’s largest calderas, the Aso Caldera, Minamioguni Town is home to abundant nature and many onsen hot springs. Among them, Kurokawa Onsen is one of Japan’s most popular onsen, with quiet, traditional ryokan inns lining both sides of the valley. Those in the know would certainly recommend a visit to a “power spot” with powerful energy nearby. There are hundreds of large and small rocks, and among them, “Oshito-ishi” is the biggest and considered to emit strong magnetism.
From late October to early November, Mazeno Gorge becomes extremely popular. Not just for its clear streams flowing around the big rocks and the broad-leaf trees on its sides, but also because of the spectacular red and yellow autumn colors of the maples. On the town’s eastern tip, Senomoto Plateau (altitude 850-900 meters) crosses over to Oita Prefecture. Located between the northern outer rim of Mt. Aso and the Kuju Mountain Range, it offers majestic views of the mountains of Aso and the Kuju range to the south from the broad open grasslands. The area is also a famous place to enjoy autumn leaves.
