Among the prefectures of Kyushu, which is known as one of the regions of Japan with the greatest number of "onsen" hot springs, Oita Prefecture produces the largest amount of hot spring water in Japan. In particular, Beppu and Yufuin are world famous onsen places. Located at an elevation of 450 meters at the foot of the Kuju Mountains in Oita Prefecture, "Nagayu Onsen" is a famous hot spring among onsen lovers. This onsen is called "Japan’s best carbonated hot spring (soda hot spring)" - a type of hot spring that contains carbon gas in high concentrations. Accordingly, it is said that this onsen stimulates blood flow and prevents and cures various illnesses. Each hot spring facility has a place where you can drink hot spring water, which is believed to enhance the beneficial effects.
In Japan, there is a “toji" (onsen therapy) culture where people utilize the effects of hot spring to enhance their natural healing capacity and maintain bodily functions. "Gozen-yu Onsen", which used to be available only for the feudal lords during the Edo Period, is now a great place to enjoy the culture of toji along with various types of onsen. In your trip to Oita, make a little side trip to enjoy a hot spring that will make you feel as if you were a feudal lord!
