Kuma River is one of the three most rapid rivers of Japan, stretching 115 km from deep inside of the Kyushu Central Mountains range to Yatsushiro. The flow of the river is gentle around Hitoyoshi Basin; however, the river-width suddenly gets narrower around Watari in Kuma Village, making the current faster and wild. That is the reason why Kuma River has long been a popular river-rafting site.
There are different courses to enjoy Kuma River. The most recommended is the "Middle Course", in which visitors can enjoy viewing the beautiful and historical scenery of Hitoyoshi Castle and townscape on a Japanese-style boat while listening to local folk songs. From the boat, you can also admire the magnificent nature along Kuma River and the view of the sheer cliffs and the mountains changing with the seasons is just like a painting. Kuma River's water is so transparent you can even spot ayu sweetfish swimming beneath the water's surface. Another course is the thrilling "Rafting", in which a rubber boat goes down the river between rocks, making great splashes on the rapid current of Kuma River, which is the one and only place to enjoy river-rafting in Kyushu.
