Fukui Phoenix Festival

Kita Tomomi

Jul 11, 2017

Be it wars, floods, or earthquakes like 1948’s magnitude 7 earthquake, Fukui Prefecture has overcome and emerged from every catastrophe like the resilient Phoenix. That’s why the biggest celebration in Fukui is the “Fukui Phoenix Festival”.

The festival will last from 4th to 6th August 2017 (Friday to Sunday). During the festival, you’ll get to enjoy magnificent fireworks and watch yosakoi in action. Yosakoi is a unique Japanese team dance where men shake instruments called Naruko (clappers) and dance to the rattling sounds. A hundred men will carry a portable shrine containing a memorial tablet for a deity, while three hundred others will play the taiko drums (traditional Japanese drums), rocking the entire Fukui Prefecture and bringing the festival to a climax.

Cheering for a better future for Fukui, the cheerleader team of Fukui Commercial High School JETS will put up a brilliant show for the crowd. Their beaming smiles will boost your morale, demonstrating that strength and perseverance are what we need to overcome any hardship.
