On the west of Himeji castle in Otokoyama district is Himeji City Museum of Literature. This distinctively unique building was designed by an internationally famous architect Tadao Ando.
I’m fascinated by how the building is made up of three very different areas: The North wing is spiral-shaped, the South wing is linear-shaped, and the last area is a Japanese house built during the Taisho era.

From a permanent exhibition in the North wing, I learnt about the history of Himeji city and the writers who lived 400 years ago during the time of wartime hero Kanbe Kuroda.

Visitors often admire the South view of Himeji castle. I’ll let you in on a secret – you can enjoy a rarer West view of Himeji castle from the museum’s North wing. All you need to do is go down the slope from 2F to 1F in the North wing of the museum.

After exploring the exhibition, I took a break at the café in the South wing. Entrance is free in this wing. The cafe opens from 9am and serves a morning set (coffee costs 430 yen).

I enjoy spending quiet mornings here, simply immersing myself in culture and history.
