House of Light

Have you ever lived in a piece of art? Well, now you can!

Simply make a reservation at the House of Light, a masterpiece created by artist James Turrell for the Echigo-Tsumari Triennale in Niigata (which happens to be the world’s largest outdoor art festival!). While the Triennale is up for a limited time, the House of Light is open all year long!

You’ll get to go on a staycation AND appreciate the arts at the same time.As its name suggests, the House of Light was built so people inside could appreciate the effect that light has on their surroundings.

My two favourite sections of the house are called ‘Outside In’ and ‘Light Bath’. I love the first because of its simplicity and subtlety. It’s basically a sliding panel on the roof that allows sunlight in – best viewed lying down on your back and gazing at the slowly changing blue sky. Beautiful.

The second, ‘Light Bath’, is a night-speciality. Fibre optics installed around the house illuminate the rooms – bathroom included! You’re supposed to enjoy the light reflecting against the water of your bathtub.

So don’t miss this chance to be able to officially say: “I’ve stayed in a piece of art!”
