Ichiroku Taruto

If you’re ever in Matsuyama City in the Ehime Prefecture, you really need to try my favorite Wagashi (Japanese sweet) : “Ichiroku Taruto” from Ichiroku Honpo. Popular among locals as a souvenir in Shikoku, “タルト” means tart, but the Ichiroku version looks more like a cake roll than a conventional tart.

There’s an interesting story behind the famous Ichiroku Taruto dating back to the Edo period (1600 – 1876). Sadayuki Matsudaira, a feudal lord of Matsuyama Domain, was doing a patrol of two Portuguese ships docked in Nagasaki Bay in 1647. Legend has it that he tried a Portuguese tart offered by the visitors, and immediately fell in love with the sweet. Matsudaira begged the Portuguese officials for the recipe and brought the precious knowledge back to Matsuyama, and the Ichiroku Taruto was born.

With its delicate red bean paste and a hint of yuzu (Japanese citron), the Ichiroku Taruto became an instant hit with the locals in Matsuyama City. Deemed a perfect match with coffee, it received the Grand Prix for the “Coffee Wagashi Award” in 2016.

A testament to its immense popularity is the proliferation of Ichiroku Taruto shops all over Matsuyama City. Just like Matsudaira, I’m sure you’d fall in love with the delicious sweet once you try it!
