Kameyama Gobo Hontoku-ji Temple

With its hondo (main temple building) and great hall listed as cultural heritage sites by Hyogo prefecture, Kameyama Gobo Hontoku-ji Temple – a temple of ‘Jodo Shinshu Honganji School’ – is a must-see! Furthermore, it’s just a stone’s throw away from Kameyama station (two stops from Himeji station of Sanyo Railway).

In 1868, the hondo was destroyed by a fire. It really amazed me when I found out that the north assembly hall of Nishi Hongan-ji Temple in Kyoto was moved here and reconstructed in place of the original hondo. Imagine moving a building!

Every forth Sunday of the month and from 8am, a market called ”Rakuichi Rakuza" opens in the temple premises. I come here for the local food and to stock up on food supplies like young sardines, small Sakura shrimp, seaweed from ‘Appare-Suisan’ in Ieshima on Seto Inland Sea, fresh eggs from ‘Akashi chicken ranch’ in Yumesaki-cho (which can last up to one month), and honey from an apiary in Hosoe.

It’s also interesting to observe the activities happening at the market. You’ll see people playing music or reading picture storybooks to children. When you are tired, you can enjoy fresh bakes or coffee on tables and chairs available. Do be prepared for the crowds of local people!
