Kanazawa Station

If admiring beautiful architecture or taking Instagram-worthy travel photos are things you enjoy, then Kanazawa city in Ishikawa Prefecture is a must-go while on your Japan adventure.

Breathtaking sights await once you arrive at JR Kanazawa station, so brace yourself (and your camera) for a feast for the eyes. Once you’ve exited the main station, walk towards the public square located on the east side and look up. You’ll see a glass roof structure called the Omotenashi Dome, which was designed with an umbrella-like shape. The design of the dome represents Japanese hospitality, taking inspiration from the city’s practice of welcoming Kanazawa’s visitors with umbrellas on rainy or snowy days.

Tip: if you arrive sometime around sunset hour, the warm sunlight in hues of orange and gold make for stunning pictures! Tried and tested by yours truly.

Further along at the main entrance, you’ll be greeted by Tsuzumi gate; the face of JR Kanazawa station. The 13.7-meter-high gate is flanked by two thick pillars and is modelled after the hand drums played in Noh theatre – a Japanese performing art which dates back to the 14th century – and Kaga Hosho performances.

P.S. There is an information kiosk and event space in the basement of JR Kanazawa station, so do make a quick stop there for sightseeing tips and recommendations before exiting.
