Karato Sea Market is a wholesale market that is also open to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. Located in Shimonoseki, this market is famous for its fresh seafood. Tourists visit this market especially to get a taste of food such as sea urchin and whale. These are food which they cannot get outside of Japan, and at a very affordable price too! More importantly, this is not your typical glamorous tourist spot. This is the place to experience the local culture.

Apart from the seafood market, there are also food stalls on the weekend where you can get sushi and enjoy it on the spot. The sushi can be as cheap as 100 yen, and a little more expensive if you choose the higher grades. But it is still a lot cheaper than most restaurants!

On the second floor, there is a conveyor belt sushi shop, Umiten karato ichiba zushi, that is very well known for its fresh sushi and reasonable price! However if you're going there for lunch, go early because there's usually a long queue of people trying to enjoy its goodness too!

Karato Sea Market is very accessible. You can get there by train, bus or even drive by yourself. Plan a day to indulge in good Japanese food with the locals at the Karato Sea Market!
