The Forest of Camper in Kawatana (川棚のクスの森) is the common name for the giant camper tree that grows in the Kawahata area in the town of Toyoura, Shimotoseki in the Yamaguchi prefecture. Behind this tree lies a story that dates back to Japan’s civil war era (Sengoku era: 1493-1576), where the horse owned by a local military commander (Yoshitaka Ouchi) was killed during battle and buried under the tree. Since then, the 1000-year-old tree is known as a powerspot.

The Forest of Camper in Kawatana is not an actual forest but named as such because each branch looks like a tree and all the branches combined resemble a forest. What's amazing is each branch can grow to as long as 27 meters!

To get there, hop on a 10-minute taxi ride from the JR Sanin-Honsen Line Kawatana Onsen Station.
