If you’re into traditional Japanese gardens, you’ll love Kenroku-en in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Chosen by the Japanese government as one of the country’s Special Places of Scenic Beauty, Kenroku-en is also known as one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan. You can explore all 11.7 hectares of the garden’s breathtaking scenery for an affordable entrance fee of 310 yen, making it a must-see regardless of your budget.

While the garden retains its beauty throughout the year, it is especially stunning in fall. Be captivated by a sea of vivid red and yellow leaves at every turn, with around 340 Japanese Maple trees, 60 Zelkova trees, and other varieties such as Azalea trees growing throughout the garden.

The best time of year for this autumnal view is from mid-November to early December, as the garden is illuminated in the evenings. Entrance is free at these times, giving you a great spot to enjoy the romantic scene of autumn leaves and enchanting lights.

To get to the park, take the railway to Kanazawa Station, then hop onto the shuttle bus that leaves the station every 20 minutes from 9:30am to 5:50pm; each ride costs 500 yen per adult. Alternatively, take a 10-minute taxi ride from the railway station.
