If you are a fan of locomotives then you will absolutely love the Kyoto Railway Museum — from steam locomotives to Shinkansen bullet trains, the museum houses 53 retired railway vehicles, that are a testament to Japan’s modernization efforts since 1972.

There is also a restaurant designed after a train carriage, an area for you to take photos sitting in a train conductor's seat and a number of interactive exhibits where you can perform the duties of a train conductor or drive a train simulator. The museum provides great fun for children and adults alike (Admission fee: 1,200 yen for adults and 500 yen for children)!

If you’re planning a visit, you can get to the museum in just a fifteen-minute bus ride from Kyoto Station.
