Most people think of visiting Tokyo or Kyoto when they plan a trip to Japan. Hakone isn’t generally on the top of people’s lists, but it should be.
The mountainside town is just a short hour and a half direct train ride away from Tokyo. You can catch the train from the Shinjuku station. The train is called the “Romance Car” (an express train to Hakone) Alternatively, you can catch the train to Odawara Station and take the bus to Hakone (which was what I did as it was less expensive)
You can catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji in Hakone from many of the viewpoints in this area. The Hakone Shrine is a little walk from the harbour and then there are steps to climb to get to the top of the shrine. The amulets are not translated into English so buying them would require some knowledge of Kanji. The contrast of the red against the green forest was so encapsulating. The best way to in the beauty and serenity of ancient Japan would be to visit Hakone early in the morning.
Also, if you have trouble getting around or planning your visit to Hakone, fret not, there is a tourist centre located in Odakyu Shinjuku Station where you can obtain additional information.
