Matsumoto-jo Castle

Dec 8, 2016

What’s the most famous sightseeing spot in Matsumoto city? Matsumoto Castle, of course! It is Japan’s oldest castle and one of four castles designated as a ‘National Treasure of Japan’.
I like how the castle is not outwardly glamorous. Instead, it has a solemn and peaceful vibe because of its elegant and mysterious black exterior. No wonder it is nicknamed ‘Crow Castle’.

I recommend coming in Spring, around April, as that’s when the cherry blossoms flower. Try to stay till nightfall as the contrast of the white cherry blossoms and the castle illuminated is absolutely stunning.

Depending on the season, there are different seasonal events for you to join and have fun. In spring, you can join the cherry blossom party with performances by Gagaku. In summer, there’s the Soba Festival (new), and Beer and Wine Fiesta. In winter, there will be a beautiful ice sculpture at the castle.

The castle is just within walking distance of Matsumoto Station, so getting there shouldn’t be a big issue. While you’re here, don’t forget to explore the surrounding castle town and Matsumoto city.
