Mikazuki Bandai is my favourite restaurant in Niigata to order and enjoy an ‘Italian’.
Nope, I’m not talking about your typical spaghetti or pizza. ‘Italian’ in Niigata actually refers to special version of Yakisoba (a popular fried noodle dish). It’s kind of a cross between Japanese and Italian cuisine. You get your standard yakisoba with cabbage and bean sprouts…which then gets topped up with a tasty meat sauce!
And Mikazuki Bandai does it best. A standard ‘Italian’ costs 330 yen, and it tastes great – not too salty with just the right amount of sweetness from the tomato-based sauce.
Try the other interesting flavours too, like the curry sauce, white sauce, chilli shrimp sauce and mapo dofu (spicy Sichuan tofu) sauce. Try them all if you can! Some of these sauces are only available for a limited time.
Hungry for more? Add various toppings on your ‘Italian’, like cheese or fried chicken.
So if you ever find yourself in Niigata, be sure to stop by Mikazuki. It’s a once in a lifetime chance to try a version of ‘Italian’ that can’t be found anywhere else in the world!
Let me lead the way: At Niigata station, use the Bandai-guchi exit. Keep walking down the road till you come across a shopping centre called Lovela Bandai. Take a right turn at Lovela Bandai, and walk towards a rainbow-colored tower called – you guessed it – Rainbow Tower. At its base, you’ll see a Starbucks café. Go up the escalators to the right of the café. Once you reach the second floor, you will immediately see Mikazuki's Bandai store.
If you see a sign behind the counter that says in English: “Italian is not yakisoba, it's Italian!”, you’re at the right place!
