Miyajima

Miyajima is one of the ‘Three views of Japan’, according to a well-regarded list of the most celebrated scenic sights by scholar Hayashi Gahō in 1643.

It is a spiritual tourism attraction that is beautiful all year round. In spring, cherry blossoms welcome you. In summer, fireworks illuminate the night sky. In autumn, maple leaves greet you. And in winter, a pretty blanket of white snow covers the area.

I love visiting in winter, not just because of the snow, but because oysters (my favorite) are in season!

If you do go to Miyajima, remember to visit the iconic floating Torii (a traditional Japanese gate that marks the entrance of a Shinto shrine). This is the Torii that always appears Japan tourism photos. Don’t believe me? Just search for ‘famous Torii’.

The Torii is beautiful during both low and high tides. It really looks like it’s floating when the tide is high. Try to walk closer to the Torii during low tides, and you just might feel its spiritual ‘power’!
