Miyajima Island

Miyajima Island is not just a popular sightseeing spot, it’s also known as one of the Three Great Views of Japan, and not without good reason.

Since ancient times, the island has been regarded as an important spiritual place for nature worship, making it home to many shrines. Among these are the famous Itsukushima Shinto Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Toyokuni Shrine, known for its five-story pagoda.

Getting to Miyajima is easy: just hop on a ferry for 360 yen per round trip. Upon your arrival, you’ll be welcomed by many local wild deer. Sometimes, you can even find deer in front of restaurants, attracted by the smell of food.

Once on Miyajima, don’t miss out on visiting the Itsukushima Shrine for just 300 yen per adult. See the famous O-Torii (Grand Torii Gate) and take in the view that changes with the rise and fall of the tide.

Apart from the shrines, you can also visit an oyster farm or the Miyajima Aquarium, where you can meet finless porpoise and other aquatic creatures for 1400 yen per ticket.

But don’t worry if you can’t visit all these sightseeing spots within a day; you can simply go up Mount Misen by the Miyajima Ropeway for a panoramic view of the island for 1,800 yen per ride.

When you get hungry, head to a restaurant called Miyajima no Kaki-kun on the island’s shopping street, where you can enjoy Hiroshima oysters, a must-try local specialty, for 250 yen per shell.
