Miyako Odori

For a taste of authentic Japanese culture, I would highly recommend checking out Miyako Odori. This is a Geisha dance performance held during April in Kyoto. Did you know that Kyoto was the capital of Japan for more than 1000 years?

The annual dancing event called ""Miyako Odori"" — which literally means the dance of the capital in Japanese — started in 1872. This event is still going strong and this year will be its 146th season! The event is held with hopes that the capital will one day return to Kyoto.

The Miyako Odori is definitely one of must-see Japan's Geisha events. A large number of Maiko (apprentice geisha) and several Geiko from the Gion district of Kyoto will perform dancing at the event.

The dance has seasonal themes featuring sakura dances. You can enjoy a special class with tea ticket (4,600 yen) or
first class (3,500 yen) at Kyoto Art Theater (Shunjuza and studio21). It is a 10-minute walk from Chayama Station of Eizan Line.

1st show 12:30 pm
2nd show 2:20 pm
