Nawate Dori Street

When I visit Nawate Street, it feels like I’m taking a trip down memory lane! Located just five minutes from Matsumoto Castle, the street has faithfully reproduced the castle town scenery of Matsumoto in the Edo period.

The entire street stretches for 600 meters, and I love to visit the many shops that sell interesting souvenirs such as antiques and handicrafts!

At Nawate Street, there are several cafés and bakeries where you can enjoy a leisurely meal. Plus, there’s plenty of benches on the street for you to take a break if you get tired of walking!

I’m told that this street is also known as "frog street", because there were many Kajika frogs in the Metoba River which flows across the street. When I entered some of the shops here, I spotted many objects decorated by frog motifs!

There is a big torii in the middle of the street, and its purpose is to mark the entrance to a sacred space. If you wish to ask for a blessing, you can visit the Yohashira shrine. For the shopping and culture enthusiast, I would highly recommend a visit to Nawate Street!
