Omi-cho Market

Omicho Market in Ishikawa Prefecture is known as the kitchen of Kanazawa City.

The history of the market goes back to 1721, when several small markets in Kanazawa were merged. The market grew larger year by year into what it is today, supporting locals by providing items like fresh ingredients, fruits and household goods. Local seafood is popular at the market, especially the Kanazawa snow crab because of its fresh taste and melt-in-the-mouth texture.

Although bargaining is generally not entertained, many shops offer samples, and certain sellers may give you a discount just before closing time. As an added bonus, purchased items can be shipped all over Japan, so if you live in the country, you can get fresh seafood delivered to your doorstep.

Most shops open from 9am and close by 5pm, so visit early to avoid disappointment. However, if you want to save money on food items, head over in the afternoon. Also note that many shops are closed on Wednesdays. There are shopping carts available to rent from the first floor and basement floor, so use them and have fun shopping!
