Akkeshi Town in Eastern Hokkaido is a town famous for oysters, which are known as “kaki” in Japanese. One great place to try the local oysters in Akkeshi is Kakiba, an oyster bar operated by Mr. Hitoshi Nakajima, who also owns an oyster farm called Kakikin. At Kakiba, you can savor the local brand of oysters known as “Kakiemon”. You’ll be amazed as Mr. Nakajima expertly opens and prepares the oysters, whose large lobes and succulent flesh are a culinary treat whether served fresh, steamed, or grilled. They also go well with alcoholic drinks, especially Akkeshi’s local brew of whisky. Other unique oyster dishes you can enjoy at the bar include oyster pizza and oyster gratin. Kakiba is located right next to an oyster cultivation site, and you can enjoy a view of the ocean and the Akkeshi Bridge at dusk while lounging in the bar’s cozy interior. It’s also a great place to meet and interact with the local patrons and other oyster lovers.
