Shinkyo Bridge

Maori

Dec 8, 2016

At the entrance of Nikko Toshogu Shrine stands the bright red bridge called Shinkyo. Inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1999, it is one of the three most unusual bridges in Japan, as well as the oldest 'drawbridge' in Japan, linking the opposite banks of the Daiya River.

Built across a river surrounded by maple trees, the changing of seasons make Shinkyo Bridge different each time you visit - it blends with the red maple tree leaves during autumn, and contrasts vibrantly with the greens of summer and spring. Don't forget to get a great photo here!

This sacred bridge was opened to the public in 1973; today you can walk across for a small fee of 300 yen. And after you cross, you'll be given a Goshuin - a bright red seal that is unique to Nikko Toshogo Shrine. But even if you decide not to cross the bridge, I suggest that you enjoy the view from a distance.
