Sweet, transparent squid sashimi and morning market

Located in the northern part of Kyushu, Yobuko Town is famous for delicious squid from the Genkai Sea. The main local specialty is "ika-no-ikezukuri", a sashimi dish of live squid. The fresher the squid is, the more transparent its sashimi slices are. The unique texture and sweetness create a delicious dish. At Yobuko, various kinds of squid come to the port, making the fresh sashimi available all year round.

Another popular thing in Yobuko is a morning market, which is held every day throughout the year except for January 1. It is open from 7:30 to 12:00, with about 60 street stalls along about a 200-meter street. They sell fresh seafood caught in the nearby sea, processed seafood such as dried fish, vegetables and fruit. Many stalls make their own dried fish and seafood, mainly squid and sardines, and sell them at the market, so you can enjoy a different taste at each stall. Many of the stall owners are energetic elderly people, who love chatting with their customers while they shop, which is another fun thing about this market.
