It’s soba noodles so good that they’ve been given three Michelin Guide stars. Introducing Takahashiya, the best fueling-up place for Mount Takao hikers. If you’re hiking to the summit of Yakuo-in Temple, or even ‘hunting’ for yōkai (supernatural monsters), you have to eat at Takahashiya!
The shop has a 170-year-old history, and is famous for its tororo soba. Tororo (rolls right off the tongue, doesn’t it?) is made from grated Japanese or Chinese yams, and is the topping for tororo soba. It is said to have fortifying and nutritive effects, making it perfect for mountain climbers.
The Tororo soba costs about 900 yen (tax included), and comes with two other side dishes. The first contains grated yam, the other green onions. Here’s how you should enjoy it: Mix the grated yam together with the green onions, and pour them on top of the soba. I slurped every last drop of the soup! Was that why I climbed Mount Takao with ease that day? Hmm...
