Wouldn’t you be interested to see the old forts of the Japanese army on a deserted island? Situated between Wakayama Prefecture and Awaji Island, this island is called Tomogashima. Its landscape may remind you of Studio Ghibli’s film “Castle in the Sky”. As tourist numbers to the island grow every year, Tomogashima Island has become a tourist hotspot.

To get to Tomogashima, take a ferry from Wakayama City’s Kada Port. A return ticket costs 2,000 yen, and the trip takes about 20 to 30 minutes. During the ferry ride, you should climb up to the outdoor deck to catch the breath-taking view. Feeling the wind on your body… it really does wonders for your mood. And it’s hard not to get excited when the ferry gets closer to the island.

Once you set foot on the island, head straight for the management office and sign up for a camping adventure! A quick note: the wells on the island don’t offer potable water, so it’s best to bring your own drinking water.

Just imagine having a bonfire on the beach with your camp all set up, and gazing into the distant starry sky. It’ll definitely bring back some of the fondest memories of your childhood.
