Tsuchiyu Onsen

You may have experienced a few onsens in Japan, but for something really unique, there are the onsens in Tsuhiyu Village.

Located in northern Fukushima and surrounded by the Azuma Mountain Range, you’re never far from an onsen in Tsuchiyu. You can find free public foot baths to soak your weary feet after a day of walking. For the full onsen experience, I recommend the “ニュー扇屋” (New Ogiya), where ¥700 lets you enjoy eight different kinds of hot springs in one place. Known as “the onsen for beautiful skin”, New Ogiya onsen contains metasilicic acid, which helps to moisturize skin, making it smooth and supple. It’s no wonder that this onsen is very popular among women!

Tsuchiyu Village is also known as the birthplace of “Kokeshi”, a handmade wooden doll originating in the Tohoku region in the mid-19th century.

First produced and sold by local artisans to supplement their income in winter, Kokeshi is still being made today using traditional methods. So ubiquitous are these dolls in Tsuchiyu that you can easily find street signs made in the form of Kokeshi. In fact the most prominent, standing 3 meters in height, can be found near the entrance of the village. And for just ¥950, you can experience making your own Kokeshi at the Asahi Photo Gallery, a museum-like workshop now run by third generation Kokeshi artisans.
