Tsumago Juku

Tsumago Juku is an old station town where the old cityscape of the Edo period (1603-1867) is still intact. To experience this charming historical place, take a 10-minute bus ride from Nagiso station.

During the Edo period, Tsumago Juku was crowded with many travelers as it is the gateway along Nakasendo Road, which connects Kyoto and Tokyo. When you arrive at the town, you’ll feel like you are on the set of a Japanese period drama.

The landscape here changes as the seasons change. When I visited in summer, the sky was blue and the moutain was a dark green. So captivating! Next time, I’d like to visit in autumn when there are beautiful autumn leaves. or winter when it’s snow-covered.

If you want to learn more about transportation during the Edo period or simply the history of the town, I recommend you drop by Nagiso Museum. In the museum, you’ll see replicas of Tumago Juku Honjin buildings, which used to be owned by governors and land owners. You can enter these buildings for about 300 yen. I’m sure you’ll be impressed by their gorgeous interiors and intricate Japanese building technology!
