What is a sea of clouds? It's a rare natural occurence you're most likely to catch from mid May to the end of October, at UNKAI Terrace, Hoshino Resort in Niseko. In fact, this serene, mountainous resort is famous for its excellent vantage point of the sea of clouds.

To see this spectacle, you'll have to take a 13-minute gondola ride 1,055 meters upwards to UNKAI Terrace early in the morning. As the sun rises, its rays will illuminate the sea of clouds from underneath, making you feel like you're on a castle in the sky. It's so close that you can almost touch it! You can join the viewing tour, even if you're not staying at the resort, but you should make your reservation in advance, especially during peak season. It's also best to check the official website so you have the latest information before heading off to the mountains so early in the morning.

When you're there, remember that this natural phenomenon, so its appearance is unpredicatable and never guaranteed. If you're not able to see the sea of clouds, you can still enjoy great views from the terrace. Soak it up as you enjoy breakfast at the café.
