To enjoy a quiet moment, I often visit Yushima Tenmangu Shrine, or Yushima Tenjin Shrine, a Shinto shrine devoted to Sugawara no Michizane, a famous 9th century scholar also known as the God of scholarship. The shrine has a very spiritual atmosphere.
The shrine is near the prestigious University of Tokyo. During examination season, don’t be surprised to find many students coming to the shrine to pray for good results.
I think the shrine is most beautiful during the Japanese apricot festival, which happens from mid-February to mid-March. Imagine the flowers on 300 Japanese apricot trees in full bloom – what a breathtaking sight! I came back to the shrine again at night to admire the trees illuminated in beautiful hues of light. It’s pretty romantic!
If you are visiting Tokyo, plan to visit the shrine during this time and you’ll be in for a visual feast!
