Zeniya is a shop selling a unique selection of candies and snacks that you can only find in Ise. It is the perfect place for you to bring a piece of Ise back to your loved ones or for yourself, to help you relive your wonderful time here.
Interestingly, Zeniya was once called Ichimonsen, or ‘one coin’, because they sell candies and snacks at a really affordable price. And you can recognise the shopfront by its unique decoration displaying an ichi monsen coin (a present day 100 yen coin) at the entrance.
One of the highlights inside is Fukubiki-Sembei, like fortune cookies but instead they have a different toy inside each cookie … a delightful surprise. Kids love getting them as gifts, so stock up on some, because they’re very reasonably priced at 700 yen per pack.
You’ll also find Omikuji Sembei, the classic fortune cookies with slips of paper telling you your fortune. You can get a pack for only 390 yen, so I guess your good fortune starts even before you bite into them!
Last but not least, my new favourite travel companion – Ryoshi Arare, also known as fisherman’s rice crackers! They’re made from glutinous mochi rice and flavoured with seaweed, squid and shrimp so they’re rather satisfying if you’re looking to fill your tummy while on the road!
