Zuihoden Mausoleum

The soul of famous Samurai Masamune Date is believed to be enshrined in Zuihoden Mausoleum. This national treasure was destroyed in World War Two, but rebuilt in 1979.

I was first entranced by the vivid colors of the mausoleum. Despite its colorful decoration, the building still has an aesthetic sensibility that reflects the creativity of Japanese craftsmen.

Why did the craftsmen pick such a colorful palette? Masamune Date was known for his glittering armor and they wanted the mausoleum to be representative of his personality.

Even if you don’t know much about Masamune’s achievements or personality, Zuihoden Mausoleum is worth the visit for its glittering buildings! You can get here by bus from Sendai station in around 15 minutes. The entrance fee is about 550 yen for adults.

Since you are in the vicinity, why not visit Kansenden and Kanouden shrines? They are also gorgeous!
