Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, is blessed with a great geographical position as it is surrounded by the sea, mountains, lakes and rivers. In addition to its abundance of nature, this former castle town’s land and water transportation systems are well-developed, allowing it to evolve as a distribution hub for many seasonal ingredients. During the Edo period (1603-1868), “Chanoyu (tea)” culture began spreading and over time nurtured a rich and sophisticated food culture in the region. Yoneda Sake Brewery was founded in this fertile region in 1896.
Matsue’s famous sake, “Toyo no Aki” is popular both domestically and internationally. Its name carries the meaning of “wishes for a bountiful autumn harvest”, an apt name for its mellow, round taste and refreshing mouthfeel. For 14 years, “Toyo no Aki” was the First-Class drink for Japan Airlines, earning it the moniker “Sake that soars the skies”. At their popular store a 5 minutes’ walk away; you can try various sake brewed to be “richly delicious and comfortable”. While tasting an assorted line up of different flavours and aromas, you might even find the “perfect bottle” for yourself! Brewery tours are free of charge.

How to get there :From Hiroshima, take the Sanyo Shinkansen to JR Okayama Station. From JR Okayama Station, take the Limited Express to JR Matsue Station. It is about 14 minutes’ walk from JR Matsue Station.
