Considered Japan's "last natural clear river", the Shimanto River is the lifeblood of the region, running deep in the heart of Shikoku. The river is criss-crossed by 22 iconic chinka-bashi - submersible bridges that are designed without balustrades. While the river is still used for fishing using traditional methods, it is also a recreational site where you can have fun with paddling canoes or standup paddleboards (SUPs) while enjoying the surrounding nature.
In early summer, you can take a river boat tour to watch thousands of fireflies dancing in the air. You can also view the river and its tributaries onboard the scenic Shimantorocco train or the Shimanto River Bus.
