Kakunodate Town
Known as the Little Kyoto of Michinoku, Kakunodate town is famous for its nostalgic street lined with well-preserved samurai residences, shaded by hundreds of weeping cherry trees that bloom in early May. Boasting as one of the best works of samurai architecture in the country, you can feel the richness and refinedness of the traditional Japanese culture beautifully crafted into this town. Even though the samurai district once housed 80 families, but today only a handful of these former homes are open to the public. Kakunodate has remained largely unchanged since its beginning in 1620.
